giveaway: bluestem, the cookbook…

For years, I had been telling my friend, Colby Garrelts, chef-owner of bluestem in Kansas City, that he should write a cookbook.  The Midwest was grossly under-misrepresented on the cookbook shelves of America, and I thought he should do something about it.

But, after three years of nagging him, I decided to drop the matter.  I often underestimate how busy chefs are.

Six months later, he called me out of the blue. Andrews McMeel, a local publishing giant (coincidentally, located right across the street from the law firm where I worked at the time), approached him about writing a cookbook.  He asked me if I’d write it with him.

Fast-forward two years: that cookbook has finally arrived. And I’m the proud photographer and co-author of it, along with Colby and Megan Garrelts. (Here’s a pdf preview.)  Together, we’re also extremely honored to have had our friend Graham Elliot Bowles write the Foreword, and chefs Daniel Humm, Sean Brock, and Gale Gand support us with their kind words.

Although the cookbook officially releases on November 8, we’re throwing an early, sneak-peek party at bluestem on November 3, where you can get a signed copy in advance of the release.  But I’m offering a way for you to get a copy even earlier than that.  This week, the publisher sent me a shipment of advance media copies. In a moment of self-promotion (please, forgive me), I’m giving away a signed copy here on my blog.

I could run a Twitter or Facebook campaign, to make you retweet, follow, share, and befriend me (please do, if you feel so moved).  But I generally operate in more eccentric ways.  So, instead, I’m going to make you work for this book.

This year, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to travel the world.  Not only have I criss-crossed our country several times, but I’ve also criss-crossed the Atlantic several times.  And everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve eaten well.

Below are eight photos of eight dishes that I’ve eaten in eight of the countries I’ve visited this year.  For a chance to win a signed copy of “bluestem, the cookbook,” tell me (in the comment section of this blogpost) the name of the restaurant and the country where I had each of these dishes.  If you’ve learned how to navigate my Flickr account, this shouldn’t be so hard.

To make things a little easier, I’ll tell you the eight countries (in alphabetic order): France, Germany, Italy, Monaco, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.

A few housekeeping items:

1. To prevent unnecessary clutter, you get one guess – your first guess is the one that counts.

3. If I’ve already sent you a media copy of the cookbook (you know who you are), you are not eligible to win. But feel free to play along.

2. This contest ends at midnight on the evening of Wednesday, October 19, Central U.S. time.  I’ll choose one correct submission at random and announce the winner on Thursday, October 20.  Please note that I leave the country on Friday, October 21, and I will will not return for a while.  So, if you win, and you want the cookbook sent to you before I leave, please check this blogpost to see if you are winner promptly on October 20, and reply with your address as soon as possible.

Good luck!  More importantly, have fun.

No Flickr access from work. Boo. And the Special Events page it also blank. Not a fan of corporate American much right now :-) Well, back to work I guess.

P.S. – If you want to email me details of the sneak-peek party, I wouldn’t mind.
