chocolate update…

The final verdict on my most recent post on chocolates (“la hacienda…“):  I preferred the two Dolfin’s (Cannelle de Ceylan and Noir 88% de Cocao) to the Chocolat Bonnat. The Noir 88% was my favorite – despite its burnt aftertaste.  The Noir 88% was everything a simple dark chocolate should be: rich, complex, hinting of nuts and coffee, and toasty.  The chocolate was thick, […]

la hacienda del bad service… and chocolate…

Recently, I expressed my frustration (on eGullet) at the dearth of good chocolatiers and chocolate selections in my hometown, Kansas City.  A fellow eGullet member, joiei, recommended that I return to area stores and pick out a few chocolates that I have dismissed as being sub-standard and try them – perhaps I’d discover a new favorite, or, […]

all finished…

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about Mimi Wheeler’s Grocer’s Daughter chocolates.  Well, I’ve finished all 16 of her truffle samples and have commented on them on my flickr account. Favorites included the Basil,  Raspberry and most surprisingly, the Milk Chocolate Courvoisier.  Also very strong contenders were the Whiskey and the Lavendar. The Whiskey Fig […]

White Truffle Honey Originally uploaded by ulteriorepicure. While I’m waiting for my French press to steep (unleaded joe), I find myself slathering white truffle oil on Cabrales cheese. No joke, I’m “insta-blogging” right now – I got out my camera and took a picture of the jar, uploaded it, and voila! Oh, and now my […]

Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates Originally uploaded by ulteriorepicure. I first encountered Mimi Wheeler’s chocolate truffles at Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan. At the time, they struck me as very odd looking. Certainly, they looked more like the real thing – truffles from the earth – than the other molded chocolates. Mimi’s chocolates are nobby. They’re […]

Touted by the likes of Food + Wine Magazine and Oprah, Elbow has garnered a lot of notable press for his creations. He has a local (Kansas […]

claiborne’s cheesecake

As I mentioned in my previous post, I hosted a dinner party last night. Eight guests. For dessert, I made cheescake. I don’t care for cheesecake… er, not sweet tooth except for ice cream and coffee-flavored desserts… but, seeing how most people do, I guessed that the majority of my dinner guests would be pleased […]

the great american dessert

I’ve only met three people in my life who don’t like chocolate. I don’t understand. I really, really, really don’t understand… I see them as tragically flawed creatures. Are they real? What must it be like? Terribly miserable state, I’m sure. I’m convinced that if these people really gave chocolate a chance, they’d change their […]
